Enjoy The Day At The Alabama Museum Of Natural History

Smith Hall

If you go back in time like, you can see that what we now call Alabama looked a lot different than today’s version. They didn’t even have a Bryant-Denny Stadium so, who knows what they did on Saturdays in the fall? In all seriousness, if you enjoy the day at the Alabama Museum of Natural History, you’re sure to have a lot of fun and learn quite a bit about Sweet Home Alabama in the process.

History’s History

The Alabama Museum of Natural History was founded in the early twentieth century, and it is home to exhibitions, collections, teaching programs, research, and service regarding the state’s natural history and ancient past. The museum is housed in Smith Hall, named for Dr. Eugene Allen Smith. Smith served as Alabama’s state geologist in the late nineteenth century and he spent nearly 40 years surveying, mapping, and collecting scientific specimens throughout the state. The building itself is an architectural marvel and worth a trip to see.

Bugs

Bugs are an important part of our story here in Alabama. That’s why the museum has an entire entomology collection. Many of the bug specimens come from Alabama, but there are also quite a few from across the world.

Ichthyology

This is the study of fish, and the University of Alabama Museum of Natural History is stocked with an ocean of history in that department. In fact, it’s home to one of the largest educational and research collections of fishes in the southeastern United States.
