Take A Walk Down The Tinsel Trail

Tinsel Trail

One of Tuscaloosa’s favorite holiday traditions is back for another year. It’s the Tinsel Trail, and this free attraction boasts 200 live lit Christmas trees that have been decorated by individuals, organizations, and local businesses. The trail runs along the Tuscaloosa River Walk, starting at the Tuscaloosa River Market and ending at the Amphitheater. It’s open through Jan. 6, and while you can stop by at any time, it’s best to view from dusk to dawn. That’s when the trees are lit up. Get some details and make plans to visit the Tinsel Trail with your loved ones.

Not Your Standard Christmas Trees

The trees that line the Tinsel Trail aren’t the same types of trees you’ll find at other holiday displays. The groups and individuals that purchase the trees typically go all out when decorating them. Take last year, for instance. A group donated a tree to the Cottondale Elementary School. The school decorated the tree with a unique ornament from each classroom. It was an excellent representation of the children at the school, and it received lots of attention on the trail. Visitors have also seen cool themed trees over the years, such as trees based on “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” and “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.” Then some trees are decorated using recycled materials.

There’s a reason the decorators go all out. The trees are judged, and everyone wants to win a prize. They know that creativity will give them an edge, so they pull out all the stops when coming up with a theme and decorations for their live trees.

Trees for a Good Cause

The Tinsel Trail is more than a favorite holiday tradition for Tuscaloosa residents. It’s also a fundraiser. Tuscaloosa’ One Place hosts the Tinsel Trail to raise money to fund the non-profit’s programs that strengthen families, prevent neglect and abuse, and promote self-sufficiency. Each tree purchased by an organization or individual provides the organization with much-needed money. Even if you don’t buy a tree, you can do your part by just attending. The popularity of the event has caused more people and organizations to get involved, which means more money for Tuscaloosa’s One Place. That’s another reason to head out to the trail this holiday season.
