Have You Tried Pickleball Yet?

Pickleball

Pickleball is said to be one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation, but if you’re like a lot of people, you don’t have a clue what it is. Here are the basics.

Combining elements of all the best racquet/net/ball sports you can think of—tennis, ping-pong, badminton—pickleball isn’t just an offshoot. It’s a game of skill, it’s fun for all ages, and it’s gaining ground as a sport in its own right. That’s not to imply that it’s new; it’s not. Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three dads to entertain their bored kids on Bainbridge Island—or so it’s told. The playful name of the sport is also up for debate. Was it the name of the dog who kept running off with the ball? Was it named for the pickle boat in crew, wherein oarsmen were chosen from among the leftovers of other boats? Possibly.

What is for sure is that pickleball, despite its humble beginnings, seems to be here to stay. It can be played either indoors or out, on a badminton-sized court. You can play doubles or singles, and the rules are simple but the competition can heat up quickly, depending on the players’ skill level and personality types. The net is a slightly modified version of a tennis net, and the ball is lightweight plastic with holes, similar to a small Wiffle ball.
