How to Pick the Perfect Pumpkin
The nights are getting cooler, and the days are getting shorter. That means fall is almost here and so is Halloween! If you are out to take home first prize for most creative jack o’ lantern in your neighborhood, it’s important to pick out the right pumpkin for carving and decorating.
Here are the “big three” factors to be aware of when choosing the perfect pumpkin:
- Make sure to select a pumpkin that doesn’t have any mold or other visible damage on the skin. This can indicate a pumpkin that is going to spoil or rot quickly after you carve it.
- Test the bottom of the pumpkin with your fingers to see if it’s firm. If it’s soft or “gives,” it isn’t a fresh pumpkin.
- Does your pumpkin have a green stem? If so, that means you’ve got a freshly harvested pumpkin that’s going to last longer after you carve and decorate it.
